A fire was deliberately set at the Slava Ukraina restaurant in Tallinn, Estonia in the early hours of the morning. Authorities received a distress call at approximately 4:45 AM about a blaze at the establishment, located near Balti Jaam on Kopli Street. The restaurant, which occupies the ground floor of the Economy Hotel, suffered damage, but firefighters managed to contain the fire by 5:00 AM.

Due to the sensitive nature of the case, involving Ukraine and a potential hate crime, the Estonian Rescue Board declined to comment and directed inquiries to the police. The incident was notably absent from the emergency services’ morning reports. According to a police spokesperson, an initial report indicated that a window of the restaurant had been broken and the interior deliberately set on fire.

The restaurant, which describes itself as “a true meeting place for friends of Ukraine” and serves traditional Ukrainian food and homemade spirits, is owned by Mart Luik. Luik confirmed to local media that the fire had indeed occurred and stated that police are investigating the circumstances while also assessing the extent of the damage. Fortunately, the destruction was not total, and one of the two affected rooms may soon reopen.

Luik believes the incident is likely linked to hostility toward Ukraine and Ukrainians. “There are quite a few enemies of Ukraine among us,” he remarked but declined to provide further details, emphasizing that the investigation is ongoing.

By mid-morning, a significant police and emergency services presence was visible at the scene, with investigators examining the damage. A broken window bore clear signs of fire damage behind it. The police have launched a criminal investigation under the Estonian Penal Code’s section on property damage or destruction, particularly when significant harm has been caused. If convicted, perpetrators could face a fine or up to five years in prison.

Authorities are reviewing security camera footage from the area to identify the individuals responsible. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
